Lines of research in the Observatori Astronòmic
One of the Observatori’s purposes, emphasized in the Universitat’s statutes, is research. Its research staff carries out this task in the Observatori, which also serves as a reception centre for PhD students, postdocs, and visiting professors, where they work and are trained in astronomical techniques. Through agreements and projects, the Observatori also promotes scientific collaboration with other centres.
The main lines of research developed so far are the astrometry of faint objects (especially asteroids), the study of extrasolar planets and brown stars around nearby radio streams, the photometry of young star clusters, the study of gamma-ray astronomical sources, and the study of the extent and mass of dark matter halos around galaxies, as well as galactic and extragalactic radio astronomy.
