Telegram to a planet blasts off on monday 14th of October
The Telegram to a Planet 2024_25 contest is already a reality and starts next Monday, October 14.
Where will our telegram travel? Of all the potentially habitable worlds that are within a reasonably close distance in terms of communication (enough time for the message to arrive and its possible response in the span of a human lifetime) this year we have selected the planet Luyten b (better known as GJ273 b) which is located 12.3 light-years from Earth in the constellation Canis Minor.
Luyten b is one of the “nearby” exoplanets with the highest Earth-like index and has already been the recipient of previous messages from METI. It owes its name to the astronomer Willem Jacob Luyten, whose anniversary (if he was still alive) would be March 7, one of the candidate dates for the radio sending of the message.
